Why is Cala Bona a popular resort?

Cala Bona in the East Coast of Mallorca has a special magnetism and charm luring tourists to return time and time again. Although it is a relatively small resort, it ticks most of the wish boxes for many tourists.

It boasts a picturesque harbour, quality accommodation, excellent restaurants and plenty of things to do in the local area.

There have been considerable changes to the resort since the late 1970's. Back then the description would have been 'small quaint fishing village with very little tourism'. The main visitors would have been those walking or cycling from from the nearby resort of Cala Millor only topped up with those taking a boat trip from the harbour. With tourism development over the years, you will find that both resorts are now virtually joined at the point of the Sabina Hotel in Calle de Rafel.

Many people enjoy walking directly beside the sea along the completely flat pedestrian promenade. This stretches from the Hipotels Cala Bona Club popular with Scandinavians, to the Castle at Punt de N'Amer at the far end of Cala Millor. Cycling along the special cycle track is also an extremely popular pastime for locals and tourists. The coastal cycle track stretches from Costa de Los Pinos to Cala Bona, continuing through Cala Millor, finally reaching Sa Coma. From Costa de Los Pinos you can also cycle to Son Servera.

Bikes of all shapes and sizes can be hired locally including the large four and six wheel versions, an excellent choice for families. Great fun, except for those pedalling!

Who visits Cala Bona?

Cala Bona Tourist Guide - Useful Advice and Travel Information (8)

In the months from June until mid September, Cala Bona can be busy with visiting families and couples. In the low-season months you will find the resort popular with lets say 'mature' couples.

The fact that the streets and surrounding countryside are mainly flat attracts many disabled and elderly visitors to the area. Although many with disabilities travel with mobility aids, equipment hire of all kinds are available in the area, wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking aids etc. You can arrange for the hire equipment to be delivered to your hotel or apartment for your arrival and collection at the end of your holiday.

Winter was in the past a favourite time of travel for retired couples who enjoyed escaping the harsh winter weather in Britain, Germany and Scandinavian Countries. However this is no longer the case due to the lack of winter flights.

In general you will not find groups of young people visiting the area, many choose instead the lively resorts of Magaluf, Palmanova or Santa Ponsa because of the variety of clubs and nightlife in the South of the Island.

Cala Bona Review

from Maria who stayed at the Protur Alicia Hotel

'We have recently returned from Cala Bona, and we just wanted to say what a beautifully clean place it is. The Council and their staff obviously work very hard to keep it this way, so thank you all very much'

Getting around

For transport to and from the Airport, you can take the new A42 resort Bus from the Airport to Cala Bona.

This method is by far the cheapest way to get to the resort especially if you are travelling alone. If the bus times don't suit your arrival time you can take the (EMT) Airport Bus to the centre of the city (Plaza de Espana) and then catch the connecting bus (401/412) to the resort.

Many people also opt to hire a rental car or arrange a private mini-bus transfer.

In the resort you can use the local (TIB) bus transport service to visit nearby towns or travel a little further to Manacor or even Palma for the day.

Bus Routes from Cala Bona

401 Palma

432 Son Servera

412 Porto Cristo - Caves of Drach - Manacor - Palma

445 Alcudia - Puerto de Pollensa

441 Cala Ratjada

451 Costa de Los Pinos - Soller (only runs in Summer)

From the town of Manacor, you can catch the train to Palma. If you have a hire-car you can park at Manacor Station free of charge. You can buy train tickets in the station or on the train itself if there is no attendant on duty. This particular train journey across the beautiful Mallorcan countryside is very enjoyable and one which we would highly recommend.

Taxis

There are two taxi ranks in Cala Bona, the first at the entrance to the Harbour, on the corner of Calle de la Tramuntana and the second in the middle of the the resort opposite the main Beach on Calle Llambies (near to the Hotel Alicia). Many journeys have set prices, you can see various options at the harbour taxi rank.

Because of the popularity of the resort, with many tourists returning year after year, you will find that much of the accommodation is reserved considerably far in advance. We recommend that if you decide to holiday there in the peak months of July, August and September it is best to reserve early to avoid disappointment.

Some hotels now offer all-inclusive holidays, although many still have the option of the more traditional half board (breakfast and dinner). You can reserve

most hotels direct on-line or book a package holiday with everything included.

There are a selection of small supermarkets selling everything from freshly baked bread to meat, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables.
